Purcellville is located in the western part of Loudoun County, Virginia, in the heart of the Loudoun Valley, about 9 miles west of Leesburg County, Virginia. Slightly to the west are the Blue Ridge Mountains (visible from many areas of the city) and the town of Round Hill, located 4 miles (6.4 km) away. Philomont is 5 miles (8.0 km) to the south and Middleburg, Virginia is about 12 miles (19 km) to the southeast. Lovettsville is approximately 11 miles (18 km) to the north.

According to the 2020 census, there were 8929 people in 2986 households. The population density was 2626.2 inhabitants per square mile (1014.0/km2 ). Racial composition of the city: 83.2% White, 6.8% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.7% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, and 4.4% from other races. Hispanics of any race accounted for 12.2% of the population.
The median income per family in the city was $139,073. Per capita income in the city was $46,399. 3.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.
Education
Educational institutions in the city are public and private. Loudoun County Public Schools operates the public schools in the city. Public schools, which cover kindergarten through twelfth grade, include Loudoun Valley High School, Woodgrove High School, Blue Ridge Middle School, Harmony Middle School, Emerick, Kenneth W. Culbert and Mountain View Elementary Schools. Patrick Henry College, a private Christian liberal arts college, is located on the eastern edge of Purcellville.
